Jason J. Sommer engages in a civil litigation practice emphasizing professional liability defense and insurance bad faith and coverage. Mr. Sommer has been certified as a specialist in Legal Malpractice by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Sommer obtained an A.B. degree in political science from the University of California, San Diego, in 1991. In 1995, he received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

Mr. Sommer began his civil litigation practice as an associate at Mackenroth, Ryan, Jacobson & Fong, handling insurance defense, coverage, subrogation and related matters. In late 1996, he moved to the firm of Jacobson-Markham, LLP, where he obtained significant case management, discovery, and trial experience. Jason joined the firm of Hansen, Boyd, Culhane & Watson as an associate in January of 1999. In May 2003, Jason became an equity partner with Hansen, Kohls, Sommer & Jacob. His practice areas include business litigation, professional malpractice defense, insurance defense and other related areas.

In 2006, Mr. Sommer was appointed by the Board of Governors to serve on the Committee on Professional Liability Insurance for the State Bar of California and served in that capacity through 2012. From 2011–2012, while serving as a member on the Committee on Professional Liability Insurance for the State Bar of California, Mr. Sommer also served as the Chair of the Education sub-committee, a committee responsible for educating lawyers on issues involving professional malpractice. Mr. Sommer also consults with lawyers and lectures on legal ethics and on ways to avoid professional malpractice. He also represents attorneys in State Bar Disciplinary matters and in fee arbitration matters.

Mr. Sommer is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento County Bar Association and the Placer County Bar Association. He is a member of the Anthony M. Kennedy American Inn of Court, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the American Bar Association National Legal Malpractice Data Center.
